12th Annual
Quality of Life
Scholarship Golf Outing
Honoring Gene Thompson

ABOUT THE EVENT
To assist in raising funds for the Gene Thompson Scholarships, the 12th annual Quality of Life Scholarship Golf Outing will be returning to a fully in-person golf outing. The event will be held Friday, September 13 at the Eldorado Golf Course in Mason, MI. Check-in will begin at 8:30am with tee-off at 9:30am.
Gene Thompson
To Gene Thompson, the only valid excuse for taking a day off work was to play 9 holes. And the only course to true success was to take Gene with you! To this end, we dedicate this golf tournament to a dear friend.

Gene first set out to explore his interests in entomology by earning a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University in 1963. He continued his education at MSU, earning a Master of Science in Entomology and through continued post-graduate study.

In 1972, Gene joined the Michigan Department of Agriculture as a District Inspector. Over the years, Gene served in various positions at MDA before rising to the rank of interim Director for the Pesticide and Plant Pest Management Division in 1995. Gene retired in 1997 after giving 25 years of service to the MDA and to the people of the state of Michigan.

In July 1997, Gene lost his life in a battle against cancer, but his strength, character, and humor lives on. To this day, he is remembered as the last true “gentleman” whose dignity, honesty, and respect for others earned him a special place in the hearts of all who knew him.

Red Ball – hang on to it!

Each team is given one red ball. The ball must be played from each shot on each hole. The team member hitting the red ball must rotate either by shot or by hole at the discretion of the team. If the red ball is hit out of play, spend no more than three minutes looking for it – we don’t want this to slow down play. A team returning the red ball at the end of the round is entitled to a reduction of one stroke from their total team score.
1.
Mulligans are available for purchase during registration for $5 per mulligan, with a limit of two mulligans per person during the round.
2.
Registration includes lunch at the turn and a certificate for a future 18 holes of golf.
3.
Scramble format: all four players hit from the same location using the best shot of the team.
4.
On the tee: Gentlemen 64 and under will play from the white tees; Gentlemen 65-79 will play from the gold tees: gentlemen over 80 and all ladies may use the red tees
5.
The team must hit the ball within a club length of the original lay of the ball. You cannot improve your lie (i.e. move out of a trap, move from rough to fairway).
6.
To increase the speed of play, from on the green, if your team is unable to sink a putt after one attempt from each player, it is an automatic two-putt.
7.
Prizes will be awarded to the First Place Men’s Team, First Place Women’s Team, First Place Mixed Team, and the Last Place Team.
8.
Traveling trophy will be awarded to the QOL Department with the best three team
average score.
9.
If a team has paid for four players and there are three or fewer present, the team may take up to four shots at each best ball location on each hole. The extra shots must be rotated among the team members present.
10.
In the event of rain, play will continue unless the course signals for golfers to leave the course. If it rains and you choose to stop, that is your choice.
